July 2009 President's Message:Years ago when my niece Kimberly was only 4 years old she experienced her first airline flight. She and her mom where needed across country; flying was the better choice. Kimberly was so excited to be “up in the sky”. All she could talk about for days ahead of time was “flying in the air.” As she and my sister sat buckled in waiting to take off she was having fun with the standard airline ‘treasures’ frequent fliers take for granted. The fold-down tray table was to die for! Her own table, made just her size! Heaven. Then there was the ‘backpack’ filled with goodies. Several colorful magazines she could handle all she wanted, and a catalog! She loved to look at all the tiny pictures of interesting items she’d one day buy. And then there was the barf bag. She was going to keep that near ‘just in case.’ As they sat there waiting to begin their adventure, Kimberly kept asking her mom about the actual flight. “Are we flying yet?” Winona told her no; assured her she would know it when they were actually flying. So Kimberly sat there, her little hands spread out on the tray table just waiting. Sure enough, as all flights begin, the plane began to back out of the terminal. “Here we go...” cried Kimberly, “we’re flying!” “No.” Winona explained they were just backing up, “you’ll know it when we are”. Then there was the taxi down the runway, “Here we go...” was the excited Kimberly’s response to the bumpity-bump of the wheels on the tarmac. Again, no; not quite yet. Finally the plane was cleared to take off. In the correct position on the runway, the plane began to accelerate. “Here we go...!” bounced the little girl. Faster and faster the plane moved over the concrete. Her tiny hands now pressed into the plastic of her tray table. (She was not about to abandon her table.) Faster and faster the huge plane sped down the runway ‘flying’. Winona had to again inform her, that no, this was not actually flying. She would know it when they were. I feel the same way as Kimberly did that day on her first flight as I sit here thinking about the job ahead of me as your newly elected President. I am filled with excitement and pride at being chosen to lead this fabulous group of knitters; I’m curious where this path and my plans will lead all of us; and yet I’m positive that side-by-side it will be a fabulous journey. I want to thank my incumbent board members for continuing on with me; and assure the new ones they are going to have a great time! I want to thank Aphrodite for a job well done and her continuance during a difficult time. I have many ideas bouncing around in my head on ways to get our Guild the attention it deserves; how to arouse new and renewed interest in machine knitting with us; ways to stimulate the desire to join us; and lastly ways to keep this great craft alive and the Guild filled with fun. Kimberly’s eyes got as large as walnuts revealing a bit of fright for the unknown, at the same time her smile showed pure rapture as suddenly she could not feel the tires contacting the tarmac any longer. She really couldn’t feel anything of the plane but the seat back her tiny frame was pressed into. This was flying, she knew it now. Yes Kimberly, “Here we go!”
